Import Duties - The Second Power Given to Congress by Our Founders to Protect our Nation
Article 1, Section 8 -- To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;
While some Libertarians would disagree, I am in favor of high import duties. Low duties always favor less developed nations, at the expense of developed nations. The most assured path to reducing wages, and to export jobs is to lower duties. This has been done for most of my Lifetime, and is a proven failure of National Economic Policy for the working and middle class. The 6 heirs of Sam Walton, who started Walmart, have more combined wealth than the lower 30% of all Americans. This is a direct result of low import duties. Anyone who is in favor of low duties is a merchant, not a manufacturer. To retain manufacturing, import duties are essential. The Constitution was agreed to by the populace to "provide for the common defense"; this is both in security in arms against hostile enemies, and in business against hostile nations. And, it was so important to our Founding Fathers, it was the second listed power of Congress.
